I know I don't write much - I got behind and then I got lazy. But today just seemed memorable and I wanted to capture it.
First day of Fifth grade.
"It was perfect, awesome." The two adjectives my fifth grader used to describe the first day of school. The smile and joy on her face as she plopped down in the car warmed my heart. I tried to capture it with a blurry picture.
She had an awesome summer (the quite common summer adjective) but has been struggling the last several months with appreciation and expectations. We've had one too many talks focusing on what you have, not what you don't. Enjoying the current event, not always planning out the next. Being thankful and appreciative of what was given, received or experienced. It's been a struggle and it's been a bit heartbreaking at times.
In my opinion, spoiling is not a verb, it's an adjective. You do not spoil a child. A child takes on the 'spoiled' attribute. I assume it begins with the verb of giving, but you can have, do, go a lot and not be spoiled. It's all in the adjective you want to describe you. Now of course I do realize 'spoiling' is a verb, but hopefully you get my point. Anyway - we are working with Ellie, and some days are just disheartening and depressing. But then there are days like today.
A genuine happiness after her first day of school. A thankful attitude for her teacher and friends. I know there will be days ahead when her attitude will be described with negative adjectives, but today I am truly thankful for the perfectly contented (all positive adjectives) fifth grader I have.
